Hypnosis is a light "trance"--a state somewhere between sleeping and waking. People in a hypnotic trance are typically very focused on one stimulus to the exclusion of others. People in a hypnotic trance are also somewhat suggestible, although they are by no means unable to control themselves and continue to bear full responsibility for their actions.

There are several ways to induce a hypnotic trance. Some of the more popular ones include the hypnosis spiral, the use of an object that glitters such as a piece of jewelry or a gold watch, and progressive relaxation.

Hypnosis Spiral

As the title suggests, a hypnosis spiral is a constantly moving spiral pattern. Hypnosis spirals are available on many websites dealing with trance induction. Some of them are available for free download; others must be purchased. Once you have obtained a hypnosis spiral, induce trance by having your subject keep his or her eyes on it for several minutes. While the subject is doing this, you can deepen the trance by playing relaxing music or offering suggestions that the subject is becoming sleepy, that his or her limbs and eyelids are becoming heavy, etc.

A hypnosis spiral can also be used to test a person's ability to be hypnotized. Have your would-be subject watch the spiral for thirty seconds. After that, have your subject look at the palm of his or her hand. If the subject sees no abnormalities in the spiral or the hand, he or she will probably be quite difficult to hypnotize. On the other hand, the subject who sees the spiral start to change colors and sees an increase in size in his or her hand is probably quite suggestible and easy to hypnotize.

Bright Objects

Another way to induce trance is to hold a bright object, such as a sparkly piece of jewelry, just above the subject's eye level and tell the subject to keep his or her eyes on it. Eventually, the eyes will become weary and the eyelids will become heavy. The hypnotist then steps in with suggestions that the subject is feeling sleepy, cannot keep his or her eyes open, etc.

Progressive Relaxation

A final way to induce hypnotic trance, favored in the psychotherapeutic and medical community, is progressive relaxation. Speaking in a calm, authoritative voice, the hypnotist instructs the subject to first tense, then relax, every major muscle group starting with the toes. By the time the hypnotist reaches the muscles in the neck and face, the subject will be in a deep, relaxed trance.

How to Induce Hypnotic Trance

The methods employed in inducing hypnotic trance vary widely among hypnotists. A good operator varies the details of his technique considerably from subject to subject, fitting it to the peculiarities of each and every personality.

Mesmer's method was to put his hands upon the shoulders of the patient and then to stroke the arms downward to the fingers. In addition, he made various passes and gentle, soothing contacts with his hand over forehead and the part to be healed. Esdaille usually put the subject to be hypnotized in a darkened room and told them to sleep, and then made passes without contact over the entire body. Braid customarily had his subjects look at some bright object and instructed them to relax and to fall asleep. Later, he slightly modified his technique to that of the direct verbal method in which repeated suggestions of fatigue and sleep were often given.

As a result of the present-day scientific understanding of hypnosis, the direct verbal suggestion technique has become the more common one. Drugs also may be utilized to produce hypnotic states, but the results are unsatisfactory since the narcotic effects very frequently interfere with hypnotic trance manifestations. Drugs which may be used are paraldehyde, barbital compounds, and amytal.

Usually the best method of inducing a trance consists of placing the subjects in a very relaxed and comfortable position, giving them at the time a few brief explanations in order to relieve any misapprehensions and at the same time afford them some idea of what is about to happen. Then, suggestions are always given in a very carefully graduated form to the effect that they are getting tired and more tired, that they are getting sleepy and even more sleepy, and that they will gradually go into a light sleep and thence into a deeper and deeper sleep. The period of time required varies considerably with every subject, some taking less than one minute to go into the deep sleep for the first time and others requiring many hours of effort.

Once the subject is asleep, the same manner of technique is utilized to elicit any of the characteristic manifestations of the trance state. Repeated suggestions to the effect desired are often given until the subject responds. The trance is usually terminated by the request to awaken, but occasionally it becomes necessary to arouse the hypnotized subjects slowly by suggesting wakefulness in the same manner that sleep was suggested.
